Cities play a key role in climate protection and climate adaptation. How we get around, generate energy, and design urban spaces has a significant impact on their future viability. To make cities more resilient to heat and extreme weather, improve quality of life, and achieve climate goals, we need solutions that address mobility, energy supply, and urban development as an integrated whole.
At the 2026 IKEM Annual Conference, we would like to join experts from academia, politics, government, and the professional field to discuss what building blocks are necessary for the resilient city of the future and what framework conditions enable the successful implementation of urban climate protection strategies.
Agenda
We are looking forward to a keynote address by Prof. Dr. Angela Schwerdtfeger (Freie Universität Berlin), who will shed light on urban climate protection from the perspective of international climate law.
In two parallel sessions, Janet Weidemann (Federal Ministry of Transport) and Dr. Agnes Katharina Müller (Jade University of Applied Sciences) will discuss the design of sustainable mobility in urban centers, while Dr. Tamara Avellán (Leibniz Institute for Ecological Spatial Development) and Dr. Pascale Rouault (Berlin Water Competence Center) will discuss ways to create climate-resilient and livable cities.
A subsequent session will focus on integrated energy supply in urban neighborhoods. Following an opening presentation by Simon Großmann (IKEM), experts Dr. Arwen Colell (decarbon1ze), Dr. Elisa Dunkelberg (Senate Department for Mobility, Transportation, Climate Protection, and the Environment), Susanne Schmelcher (dena), and Carsten Schweneker (EBERO AG) will discuss strategies for climate-friendly energy supply in urban areas.
The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring Lorenz Gösta Beutin (Die Linke), Timm Fuchs (German Association of Cities and Municipalities), Dr. Jan-Marco Luczak (CDU, invited), Julia Schneider (Alliance 90/The Greens), and Dr. Kerstin Stark (Changing Cities, invited), who will explore the question of what political and regulatory framework climate protection in an urban context will require in the future.
