Energy expert Philine Wedell was appointed to the management of the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) at the beginning of February 2026. Together with the other Managing Director Susan Wilms and the IKEM Board of Directors, she will assume responsibility for the operational management and strategic development of the institute.
Philine Wedell is an industrial engineer and renewable energy expert with a focus on energy policy and regulatory issues. She was already working as a Research Associate at IKEM in 2018, researching local energy supply concepts based on renewable energies, among other things. Further professional stations took her to the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and the German Energy Agency (dena). Most recently, as team leader for power generation, she managed several strategically important projects for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
Philine Wedell explains her new role:
“I am looking forward to actively shaping the future of IKEM together with Susan Wilms and the entire team. As the first non-lawyer on the management board, I would like to further strengthen the interdisciplinary work of the institute. Especially in times of dwindling ambitions in climate protection, we want to counterbalance this with our broad-based research, promote innovative solutions and provide new impetus for energy and transport policy.”
Prof. Dr. Michael Rodi, Scientific and Managing Director of IKEM, emphasizes the long-standing cooperation:
“Philine Wedell already knows us from her previous work at IKEM and has always provided us with important ideas on the topics of climate protection and the energy transition in recent years. I am delighted to be working with her now as Managing Director. With her broad expertise in energy policy, regulation and market design, she will provide valuable impetus for the successful development of the institute.”
Prof. Christian Held, Deputy Chairman of the IKEM Board, also welcomes the appointment:
“Philine Wedell has extensive expertise in leading interdisciplinary teams, managing complex structures and working with public clients – key prerequisites for IKEM’s success as an independent, self-funded research institute. We are very much looking forward to working together.”
