Ammonia Bunker Stations

IKEM is investigating the land-based regulatory framework for ammonia refueling stations.

Project

The use of ammonia as a fuel is a strategy for decarbonizing shipping that is being investigated and advanced in the CAMPFIRE research project. In the sub-project “Ammonia Bunker Stations”, IKEM analyzes the onshore legal framework for the construction and operation of ammonia refueling stations to supply fuel to shipping.

In addition to the ammonia refueling stations themselves, the project focuses primarily on the question of the extent to which concessionaires at ports can be obliged to operate ammonia refueling stations. On the basis of this investigation, legal obstacles to the establishment and operation of ammonia refueling stations will be identified, concrete legal amendment proposals for the further development of the legal framework will be developed, and finally the legal framework conditions for the approval of ammonia-powered inland vessels will be analyzed.
