Mobility faces particular challenges in rural areas: The lower population density and less developed infrastructure lead to a reduced range of public transportation options. The greater distances between homes, workplaces, schools and shopping facilities also increase dependence on private vehicles.

The aim of the LMEU project is to identify suitable measures for German mobility policy in rural areas. To this end, mobility measures in 29 European countries are being examined and compared. By analyzing success and risk factors, the aim is to determine how political and legal framework conditions influence rural mobility. Detailed studies in five sample countries provide in-depth insights into the legal basis, responsibilities and implementation mechanisms at various political levels.

IKEM is responsible for project management and the organization of all stakeholder events. The methodological and substantive work includes desk research and empirical data collection in the five sample countries. In addition, IKEM develops legal recommendations for action for various administrative levels.
