This article analyzes the new energy-sharing regulation under Section 42c of the Energy Act (EnWG), which, effective June 1, 2026, establishes for the first time an explicit legal framework for the shared use of electricity generated from renewable sources via the public grid. The focus is on whether and to what extent the new legal framework enables practical implementation in neighborhoods and other local settings. In particular, the analysis examines the contractual structure, market communication, net metering, residual electricity supply, and the economic and digital prerequisites for a practical implementation. Finally, the article identifies the key regulatory barriers and requirements for the successful implementation of energy sharing.
