First global rules of the UNECE regarding automated driving systems

Cover of the IKEM study

Abstract

In June 2026, the UNECE adopted the world’s first regulatory framework for automated driving systems (ADS). The regulations contain detailed technical requirements for ADS and advance the global harmonization of the approval of automated vehicles, thereby promoting cross-border trade and transportation. Despite this breakthrough, global regulations governing operational procedures are still lacking. As a result, national regulations governing the approval and operation of vehicles equipped with ADS will remain in effect for the time being.
