A comprehensive approach to climate action
The energy transition and climate action require not only technical and legal solutions but also broad social acceptance. The challenge lies in effectively engaging diverse target groups, addressing their unique perspectives, and fostering a shared understanding of the need for change.
Quelle: IKEM The ACE Approach
The ACE approach is IKEM’s applied research framework to foster and strengthen public acceptance of renewable and green energy technologies. It combines tailored communication and participation measures with cutting-edge social science research, turning local dialogue into a driver of successful implementation.
Communication
Each ACE process begins with an in-depth analysis of the social landscape: Who are the key stakeholders? What are their interests, motivations, and concerns? Through interviews, surveys, and stakeholder mapping, IKEM identifies effective narratives, messages, and communication channels — from town hall discussions to local media or social platforms.
Participation formats
Building on these insights, IKEM co-designs engagement formats that invite participation and ownership — from community workshops and participatory planning to financial or social involvement models. Depending on the context, existing participation models may be adapted, or bespoke formats developed. The goal: to create meaningful opportunities for involvement that foster understanding and acceptance.
Applied research
ACE is grounded in state-of-the-art acceptance research and continuously integrates new findings from this dynamic field. Its modular, agile design makes it adaptable across contexts and technologies — from onshore wind and hydrogen infrastructure to local heating networks.
Design
Finally, ACE places strong emphasis on accessibility and design. Research findings and tools are translated into clear, visually engaging formats — such as infographics, process charts, videos, and handouts — making complex knowledge tangible and usable for municipalities, project developers, and policymakers alike.
