Design and science communication – Intern wanted
Where: The Sustainability & Innovation team of IKEM (Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility)
How long: Between 4 to 6 months
Internship remuneration: 450 € per month for a 40 hour working week

IKEM’s Sustainability & Innovation team is looking for a creative, initiative-taking intern with a background in graphic design to join the visualisation and communication efforts of IKEM starting in September or October 2021.

About IKEM

IKEM (Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility) works to accelerate and achieve the global energy transition and to reach our climate targets on time. The Institute offers leading interdisciplinary knowledge through six expert teams that work on energy law, climate finance, sustainable mobility, energy transition in transport, public relations, and sustainability and innovation. The latter two teams place a strong emphasis on the importance of communication to raise awareness on climate and energy topics among broader audiences, and to create not just acceptance, but even excitement around the prospect of a decentralised renewable energy supply and the many possibilities for public engagement and social innovation it holds.

About the position

The importance of design and visual communication is being increasingly recognised in scientific fields. IKEM has always placed great value on such tools. We are committed to answering the changing demands and preferences of our target audiences, from sector experts to policy-makers to the Fridays-for-Future generation. As a graphic design intern, you will work in close collaboration with the Sustainability and Innovation team, as well as with the Public Relations team at IKEM. Guided by our senior designer, your tasks will focus on visualising research results relating to climate protection and the energy transition while contributing to the development of IKEM’s visual identity. The work will range from formatting text, developing easy to understand infographics and creating artwork for social media. Ongoing projects that you will also contribute to include the initiative ‘EQT: The gender equality toolkit’, which IKEM develops together with the design agency Ellery Studio, and the IKEM Academy: Energy & Climate, the Institute’s international annual flagship event.

About you

The following features would make you a great fit!

  1. Your internship is a mandatory part of your education
  2. You are responsible, detail-oriented, proactive, organized, a fast learner, and willing to step out of your comfort zone
  3. You’re an excellent communicator
  4. You can work under pressure and have sharp problem solving skills
  5. You are comfortable working with InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  6. You have experience in print/web graphic design, with a focus in editorial design and branding
  7. You are fluent in German and in English

The following features are a plus:

  1. You have (some) experience with basic video editing
  2. You have some experience with animation (digital whiteboard drawing) and/or would love to learn
  3. You are interested in topics related to sustainability, climate and energy
  4. You would like to make the world a better and more colorful place
