In this project, IKEM provides scientific assistance for the revision of the European greenhouse gas reduction quota for the transport sector.
The European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) defines minimum greenhouse gas reduction requirements that biofuels, biogas and liquid biomass in the transport sector must meet in order to be recognized as sustainable. According to the current directive, this greenhouse gas reduction quota is at least 60 percent for systems put into operation from 2021. These requirements are set to be tightened in the future.
The project supports the work of the Federal Environment Agency and the Federal Ministry for the Environment with technical and scientific analyses on the green house gas reduction quota. The research focuses on the trade-off between the various options for reducing emissions in road transport and the availability of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO).
In the project, IKEM is leading the concept development for recording the extent of non-public charging and for providing evidence of purely renewable electricity procurement for electromobility. IKEM also prepares legal opinions on ad hoc inquiries from the principals.
