IKEM explores the legal framework for negative emission technologies in agriculture and forestry.
Without the use of negative emission technologies (NETs), it will be difficult to achieve the 1.5°C target of the Paris Climate Agreement. NETs can be used to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and to recycle and store them. In a study, IKEM examines the international, European and national legal frameworks for NETs in the AFOLU sector (agriculture, forestry and other forms of land use). The study identifies a gap in the current regulation of NETs and makes recommendations for action. NETs can only unfold their climate impact with a coherent legal framework.
