The IKEM is investigating the basis for reactivating and expanding track infrastructure in the growing rail traffic sector.

Railroad tracks

Project

Train formation and stabling tracks are key components of an efficient rail infrastructure – for both freight and passenger transport. They increase operational flexibility, enable trains to be supplied and strengthen the resilience of the rail network. Nevertheless, many of these plants have been decommissioned or dismantled in recent decades.

Against the backdrop of rising traffic figures in the rail sector, the project is investigating where additional capacity is needed in the rail network and how this can be created by reactivating, upgrading or expanding track systems. In addition to technical and operational analyses, the project develops recommendations for the further development of the legal and financial framework conditions for infrastructure expansion. To this end, IKEM identifies European best practices and examines the applicable legal framework for planning, approval, financing, provision and maintenance of such facilities.
