Ammonia is an energy carrier with great potential for the use in inland and maritime shipping – a sector that so far has made little progress towards decarbonisation. The aim of the CAMPFIRE research project is to develop new processes for the decentralised production of ammonia based on renewable energies and to establish ammonia as a maritime fuel.

As part of the CAMPFIRE, the project partners develop a prototype of an ammonia-powered sport yacht with a hybrid system consisting of a solid oxide fuel cell and a regular engine. The protection of public interests like health, security, consumer as well as environmental protection is at the heart of the development process. That is why IKEM analyzes the legal framework for the CE marking of sport yachts and also develops a concept which addresses the legal requirements for future market introduction of ammonia powered sports yachts.
